Aja

Another true classic from 1977. I recall this was the album the HiFi pushers would play, kinda loud, to demo equipement way out of my budget. Of course, I was around 13 at the time, so sure… but I loved being able as a kid to just walk in and experience some state-of-the-art equipment. Guess they were thinking “he’ll be back in a few years”.

Album cover for Steely Dan's classic album "aja", released 1977. It is a mainly black cover with just a hint of a female face and the white and red stripes of her kimono. The title is set in a brushed script with eastern associations. The band name is set in Helvetica.

A few years later, the demo album of choice was Dire Straits’ “Love Over Gold”, but now on CD. The dynamic range of Private Investigations was something new, to me anyway.

Based on the original photograph by Hideki Fujii of Japanese model and actress Sayoko Yamaguchi, and album design by Patricia Mitsui and Geoff Westen. Re-created with Affinity Designer on Mac.
